If the Vietnam War had never happened, Tullahoma jeweler Howard Thompson
may never have discovered that he had a passion for nature photography.
It was 1965, and Thompson, who was enrolled in an ROTC program, knew
that he would be destined for Vietnam as a commissioned officer.
"I knew that it would tear my parents apart, because I was an only
child," says Thompson. "So I decided I would buy a camera and
take pretty pictures and send them home. That way they wouldn't worry
about me."
As soon as he arrived overseas, Thompson, who had only taken pictures
with a Kodak Brownie, bought his first single lens reflex camera—
a Canon—roll of slide film, and immediately began to take pictures. more
